A waterfront Chalet

The Emanzini Country Resort is set in the colourful surroundings of the rolling eastern Free State grasslands. The resort is built on the banks of the Vrede Dam that supplies the town with its water.

It has a picturesque, willow-draped launching ramp and a variety of trees, including willow and gum trees providing an abundance of shade on the beautifully kept lawns.

The dam is stocked with carp, barbel, and the rumour of bass and yellow fish keep rod-bearing hopefuls parked around its perimeter.

At the confluence of two spruits, the 49-year-old dam is the creator of a wetland that now hosts a large variety of birdlife. You can get to them by boat or canoe. Memel, a potential world heritage site, is just a few kilometres away and offers a prolific, wide variety of wild birdlife.

Also with an Ernie Els one-wood distance of the resort is the picturesque 18 hole golf course between the banks of the spruits that have been used to form many ball-gulping water features.

Previously named simply the Vrede Dam Resort, it was a fishing and birdwatching dam with little else. The dam now boasts a string of floodlights along a straight section of the waterfrontage which provides South Africa's first floodlit water-ski venue. The resort was used by wakeboarders for the first time in February 2000 and 2003 for the Inter-provincial Championships.
